US Consumers Battling for Right to Buy and Sell Raw Milk

In the United States there are currently strict federal rules that cover milk production and distribution which prohibit the sales of raw milk directly to consumers. Some consumers have taken issue with this and are appealing to the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection to change the market regulations so that they will be able to buy raw milk for health reasons. Those who are seeking this type of milk feel that it actually is healthier for themselves and their families than pasteurized milk which they take issue with. Depending upon how things pan out for those consumers, there could be a change in the way that milk is marketed as consumers seek to find alternatives to certain products that they disagree with in terms of the philosophy. Currently, regulations are in place due to the pathogens that can sometimes be found in unprocessed milk so what these consumers are appealing with is the idea of new guide lines for farmers who would sell raw milk that, if followed, reduce the risk and in addition to this, specific labeling for raw milk so that consumers can be aware of what the risks are if they choose to consume such a product.

Farmers have traditionally been unwilling to sell such milk, even from Grade A dairy farms due to the risks involved, but if samples are taken regularly then it should not be a problem, say advocates. There would be only on site sales at the farms to eliminate the dangers posed by transportation of raw milk, as well.
